New @ the ERCThese titles are new and noteworthy in the ERC's collection.
AIMS (Activities Integrating Math, Science, and Technology). Awesome Addition and Super Subtraction.
"The learning experience in Awesome Addition and Super Subtraction" make use of four learning environments embodied in the Model of Mathematics. The for students is to understand these two whole-number operations, and to this end students must be engaged in all four environments [doing, writing, illustrating, thinking]."Diffily, Deborah and Sassoman, Charlotte. Project Based Learning with Young Children.
"In Applied Learning projects, children select an area of interest and work collaboratively to research the topic. They are encouraged to locate and use as many different sources of information as possible. After completing their inquiry, they share what they have learned by creating a real-world product, examining models of the product, and planning for a specific audience."Gallagher, Patricia A. Teaching Students with Behavior Disorders: Techniques and Activities for Classroom Instruction, 2nd ed.
"There is no single definition of behavior disorders because there is no single demarcation point on the continuum from normal to abnormal behavior. Definitions vary from agency to agency according to the services they provide. Troubled youth are eligible to receive public education if they meet the criteria identified by the Individual Disabilities Education Act as determined by a multidisciplinary team."Haven, Kendall. Voices of the American Revolution: Stories of Men, Women, and Children Who Forged Our Nation.
"When we think of the American Revolutionary War, certain images naturally flash into our minds--images of angry tea protests in Boston, of Paul Revere's midnight ride, of the signing of the Declaration of Independence in Philadelphia, of stirring bravery by a small band of soldiers making a dangerous night crossing of the Delaware River through swirling floes of ice, of Betsy Ross diligently sewing the first flag, of the bitter deprivation at Valley Forge--and then our minds jump straight to glorious victory in the bright sunshine at Yorktown. But these images don't connect--not with each other and not with the reality of the world around them."Houle, Michelle M. Issues in Focus: AIDS in the 21st Century.
"Many people in the United States are beginning to believe that the AIDS epidemic is under control, but this is not true. Worldwide, there are about 42 million people living with HIV and AIDS, approximately 5 million adults and children were newly infected with HIV during the year 2002 alone.... Although many Americans understand how HIV and AIDS can be prevented, the AIDS epidemic is still very serious in the United States, and it is hitting certain communities harder than others."Hynes, Arleen McCarty and Hynes, Berry, Mary. Biblio/Poetry Therapy: The Interactive Process: A Handbook.
"We should admit from the start that bibliotherapy is a somewhat problematic term.... The particular capacity of literature to renew and heal the human spirit is at least as old as Aristotle's discussion of catharsis in the Poetics.... One school sees the healing process as taking place through reading itself. This mode is a direct development from the traditional role of the librarian as provider of readers' advisory services. In the early 1920s, as an outgrowth of this activity, some librarians made a point of searching out and offering reading materials specifically for their therapeutic potential."
material.Thompson, Gail L. What African American Parents Want Educators to Know.
"Although schools cannot become the panacea for all of society's ills, the school system can take measures that might dissuade some African American youths from dropping out of school as a result of peer pressure.... Teachers can do this a number of ways that could make the curriculum more interesting and relevant to students. Inviting guest speakers from the local community to share their personal stories of resiliency and how peer pressure affected them is one way. Another way is by using autobiographies and biographies of African Americans as tools that will enable students to read about, write about, and discuss the pros and cons of giving in to peer pressure."Tomei, Lawrence A. Challenges of Teaching with Technology Across the Curriculum: Issues and Solutions.
"Technology empowers learners with tools to enhance their learning styles and make concepts understandable and interesting. There are a plethora of products involving educational software formats such as mathematical manipulatives; data collection and graphing tools, including spreadsheets; and problem-solving, simulation, games and drill and practice instructional programs. The classroom teacher remains the critical factor in making important decisions regarding on-task time and desired learning outcomes."Avi. The Good Dog.
"McKinley recognized the people as the Sullivans of Pine Smell Way. The dog was a big setter called Redburn, who lived with them. Taller than McKinley, slim and graceful, he was perfectly groomed, fur always seeming to have been just brushed. He trotted with perfection, too, head high, tail extended, leg feathers flowing. Redburn expected admiring glances--from humans and dogs alike."McKinley sniffed the group. All three smelled of soap. They always did."
Nimmo, Jenny. Griffin's Castle.
"Winter held back while Dinah and her mother settled into Griffin's Castle. And Dinah began to bring the house to life again. Every day, after school, she walked through the empty rooms, telling them how fine they were. She told them their names, how the curtains framed their empty windows, the color of the carpets at their feet, and the subjects in the paintings on their walls. She even mentioned an occupant, someone small and still quite shadowy, who played in a corner and sang in Welsh."Yee, Paul. Dead Man's Gold.
"Gold attracts men like a magnet awakening metal pins, like honey humming to bees. It shines and never rusts, flattens thin as tissue and reels into feathery threads. It crowns the kings of mighty empires and dazzles the eye when spun as filigree jewelry. It has caused nations to go to war, men to commit murder, and innocent people to be enslaved."
"Only a generation of readers will span a generation of writers."

WKU Libraries Electronic ResourcesWKU Libraries' homepage and TopperInfoPortal (TIP) are great resources on or off campus. If you are doing research for an online class, working from home or the office, or are interning this semester and won't have much of an opportunity to visit the WKU Libraries, you'll find TIP an invaluable resource. Look up articles on our subscription databases; review our subject area research guides; search electronic journals; or search TopCat2000, the WKU Libraries online catalog. Here are some articles on disability and special education you will find on the KYVL (Kentucky Virtual Libraries) databases or on the EBSCOHost subscription databases, accessible remotely through our new proxy server by logging in using your WKU email address and password. Some databases are not accessible through the proxy server, and for those, user IDs and passwords are available through the WKU Libraries Reference Desk at 270-745-6125. You must be a current student or faculty or staff member. Your name and last four digits of your WKU ID number are required for remote access passwords for databases not available through the proxy server. This time we searched the phrase "learning disabilities" in Silver Platter's Mental Measurements Yearbook for reviews of tests. it consoles, it distracts, it excites, it gives you knowledge

Make books your companions;
let your bookshelves be your gardens:
bask in their beauty, gather their fruit,
pluck their roses, take their spices and myrrh.
And when your soul be weary, change from garden to garden,
and from prospect to prospect.
