14, 2005:  Felts Log House Educational Tour: 9:00 and 11:00 a.m., Kentucky Library and Museum. Observe demonstrations of open hearth cooking and spinning by educator and writer Joanne Seiff, an award winning spinner who has diverse experience in open hearth cooking. Pre-registration is required. For more information or to enroll, contact Lynne Ferguson at 270-745-2594.

14-15:  Kentucky Writers Conference: Thursday, April 14 - 11:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. and Friday, April 15 - 8:00 a.m. - 11:00 p.m., Bowling Green Community College (South Campus). This conference will feature Kentucky writers and their work. Some of the Kentucky Literary Award nominees will participate in writing workshops, readings, and special presentations. These sessions are open to high school students, WKU students and the general public. The sessions will begin on Thursday, April 14 and continue through Friday, April 15, 2005. On Friday, April 15, we will announce the winners of the Kentucky Literary Awards at a luncheon held in their honor. Winners of the awards will receive $1,000 and a commemorative plaque. Individuals from across the state have been chosen to serve on the judging committee. For more information, contact Jayne Pelaski at 270-745-5016.

15-16:  Southern Kentucky Book Fest: Friday, April 15, 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., and Saturday, April 16, 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., Sloan Convention Center, Bowling Green. The Southern Kentucky Book Fest begins Friday with Children’s Day. Busloads of school children participate in a variety of activities: "make and do," storytelling, drama, music, costumed literary characters, and the opportunity to meet their favorite authors. The major book signing event held on Saturday, April 16, will feature more than 200 distinguished authors. Nationally known authors who are currently on the bestseller lists or have had recent books on the bestseller lists join the festivities. Many of the authors will be invited to give special presentations, participate in panel discussions, or lead workshops. More than 300 volunteers from the community and region help to make this event a huge success. Some notable authors already confirmed: Sue Grafton, Robert Morgan and Newbery Award winning children’s author, Sharon Creech. For more information, contact Jayne Pelaski at 270-745-5016.

19: Robert Penn Warren Centennial Exhibition. This exhibit is composed of photographs of acclaimed novelist and poet Robert Penn Warren. The photographer is William Ferris. The opening reception will take place on April 21 from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. The exhibit is being held in conjunction with the Robert Penn Warren Symposium. Discovering What Works for Struggling Readers: Journeys of Exploration With Primary-Grade Students, by Bev Wirt, Carolyn Domaleski Bryan, and Kathleen Davies Wesley
This book takes us into the lives of three children learning how to read. The process offers teacher helpful hints on how to teach children who are struggling to read.

Writers for Young Adults,  by Ted Hipple
This book profiles 129 authors and provides information on their lives and their books. It not only has popular authors, but others that aren’t as well known.

 Teaching Strategies: A Guide to Effective Instruction,  by Donald Orlich
A useful guide incorporating strategies that will help teachers teach effectively. There are key points and ideas at the beginning of each chapter that make it easier for the teacher to implement in the classroom.

Customized Library Skills Instruction:
Roxanne Spencer, ERC Coordinator, invites all education faculty to schedule bibliographic instruction classes in the Educational Resources Center for their teacher education students. BI classes include a tour of our unique subject alcoves, the ever-growing juvenile collection, curriculum guides, and online subscription databases. We encourage faculty to ask us to design instruction to suit their particular needs. Tips and training on successfully searching WKU Libraries’ databases are available for students, staff, and faculty. Please don’t hesitate to ask us to create a specific class to meet your needs!
